作品賞析
In most people’s minds, the pedestal is often regarded as an accessory, and the object placed on the pedestal is habitually considered as the main body of the work. In this “pocket-sized version” of his work Human Body Attachment Project, the artist Chiu Chih-Wei sought to reverse this habit. Four human figures cling to the pedestal’s edge with their heads buried in their arms, and their suspended bodies blur the relationship between protagonist and supporting role. Meanwhile the tension in their muscles shows their human strength and is a kind of display of beauty. In the history of sculpture, Rodin was the first to discard the pedestal in pursuit of a more humanistic expression, but Chiu Chih-Wei brings it back and transforms it into a part of the sculpture. This “pocket-size version” was a prototype that Chiu used to launch his “Human Body Attachment Project” series of works, in which he placed life-sized sculptures of the human body indoors or outdoors to explore the multiple possibilities in the relationship among the sculpted human bodies, their spaces, and viewers.
