The work Mountain, Ghost, Sun, Umbrella is a video composed of four chapters, each connecting the concepts of mountain, ghost, sun, and umbrella. The inspiration came from artist Chen I-Chun’s experience of having a classmate in primary school who was suffering from leukemia. Chen I-Chun began to think about issues of life and reincarnation, as well as her relationship with the deceased. The work uses video clips from the works of French film pioneer Georges Méliès, using photographic techniques to create phantoms and various bizarre images; it also uses film post-production technology to take video images of the legendary movie star Marilyn Monroe and replace them with her own face as a metaphor for the cycle of life and death in folk belief. By combining stories and the use of contemporary imaging technology, the artist not only pays homage to early film directors, but also reconnects past images as if reincarnated, forming an image narrative that reflects on the past, present, and future.
