Artist Chen I-Chun’s creations mainly focus on new media, experimental images, and contemporary paintings that depict various social issues through images mixing reality and fantasy. Postwar Savage Code revises the true stories of members of the artist’s own family. For her, what “savage” conveys is a state of life in which people choose to remain silent or isolated because they are still afraid after experiencing war or repressive rule. The work begins with the story of a Taiwanese man during the Japanese colonial period who becomes a deserter in order to survive and take care of his children. The work consists of three stories: it begins with the story of a Taiwanese man during the Japanese colonial period who deserts from the army in order to survive and take care of his wife and children. He becomes a hunter who abandons civilization in order to live alone in the mountains. Finally, he is a small-town mayor who becomes a political prisoner on Green Island. The images of the characters and of the backgrounds in the video are created respectively with a random number generator and with an artificial intelligence algorithm, and the prototypes of the characters are encrypted. Through the different settings, they show the damage that war brings to human civilization and the individual soul.
