The artist Chen I-Chun uses video recording, animation, and painting as her main creative techniques. Her Under Surveillance combines 2D real photography and 3D virtual images, and its content is the story of the prisoner of war camp at Jinguashi, which was then known by its Japanese name Kinkaseki. It ponders power relationships under the structure of war and the human rights of prisoners of war. When Chen I-Chun studied the history of Jinguashi, he discovered that the Taiwanese soldiers working in the POW camps were themselves forced and pressured by the Japanese army to work there and cause death, after the war the a number of them were tried and punished by the International Court of Justice. Under Surveillance takes this little-known aspect of war history, reproduces the soldiers’ appearance through 3D images, and a narration from a first-person perspective tells of a Taiwanese soldier’s experiences and moods through a trial, in order to bring out the story of characters behind the POW camp, as well as the meaning of war and various human rights issues.
