Artist Chang Hua believes “all things are in constant motion.” Everything we see is continuously changing, and over time, these changes accumulate in layers. Crystalline minerals symbolize the results of this accumulation. Surrounded by the nature environment since childhood, Chang often uses natural or indoor scenery as his theme. His work Down to the Depths of the Ocean is an attempt to combine seascape with indoor scenes. Inspired by memories of looking out the window of his home on the French Riviera at the sea’s shimmering waves, he captures that essence in his artwork. When you look at the work up close, the large area of blue with delicate ripples resembles clear sea water lapping at the shore; when you look at it from a distance, it evokes the feeling of looking through a window at the moment when a breeze lifts a corner of blue curtain, revealing the scenery outside. The artist employs glazing techniques to paint a sea scene that sparkles like crystal. The trajectory of time is reflected in the layers of oil paint, building up one after another to form the painting.
