In her work Overstep, a large number of meat slabs are crossing the turnstiles at a train station in various ways, and the crowd in the foreground appear to be shouting and taking pictures, as if they are cheering competing athletes in an obstacle course. When the artist Kuo Yen Ying was traveling in Europe, she often saw young people jump the turnstiles at train stations, and the station guards would do nothing to stop them. Here she combines this memory with that of Olympic hurdle races. The floor in the foreground is well-lit, like a stage. The pieces of meat about to jump over the turnstiles are also like star athletes about to enter the competition, while the meat pieces low in the foreground have their cameras ready. With humor, she transforms the petty crime of fare evasion into a grand sports event to satirize the absurdity of it.
