Artist Kuo Yen-Ying believes that “in a capitalist society, a person’s value is determined solely by productivity, a situation similar to a piece of meat being weighed and measured.” Therefore, she strips away the external features of “people,” erasing facial expressions and any clues of age, transforming them into uniform “pieces of meat.” The repetitive cycle of a washing machine hints at life at the bottom of society. Kuo Yen-Ying combined features of a washing machine with the recreational qualities of a prawn fishing pond to create Glittering Casino. The pieces of meat, which have small, fork-like hands, form a circle around the washing machine, ready to retrieve clothing that has fallen into the water. Finding a coin in the washing machine represents the idea of small joys amid life’s dreariness. Despite social oppression, this piece of meat at the bottom of society still finds happiness amidst the monotony of routine. However, this humorous image raises a poignant question: has each of us also become “a piece of breathing meat”?
