TSAI Shih-Hung’s visual elements are taken from animation, cartoons, movies, and photographs in order to create fantastic sceneries that differ from everyday lives. Butterfly and Citizen shows a rectangular military bunker resting on a branch against a highly textured background. Several soldiers patrol the bunker, while red colored individuals, which could be either friend or foe, fly around. The entire composition conveys the sense of insecurity brought about by the dread of impending war. TSAI Shih-Hung’s works depict alternative imaginations of national boundaries, sovereign relationships between countries, and the realistic state of being in the modern society.
