TSAI Shih-Hung derives his creative inspiration from modern technology and popular computer strategy games, and his works have forged a virtual empire that is completely detached from reality. Black Submarine and Cloud depicts a dark and shadowy sky on the composition. Several black military submarines have surfaced, waiting for the moment to strike. Comet-like streaks of light are actually missiles fired during the military exercise, while the three donut-shaped clouds are explosions of airburst rounds. TSAI Shih-Hung has deliberately converted the scene of military exercises into a flamboyant fireworks display as a satirical critique of the incessant TV replays where military exercises serving as deterrence are depicted as an endless performance. The final result shows a magical yet insecure atmosphere that serves as a metaphor to the unfeeling and isolated environment as well as the artificial truths we are exposed to in our daily lives.
