TSAI Shih-Hung derives his creative inspiration from modern technology and popular computer strategy games, and his works have forged a virtual empire that is completely detached from reality. Unknown is composed of 4 pictures that illustrate men and women wearing the same clothes waiting in a queue, beach chairs on the rooftops of a skyscraper, a flock of bird people descending from the sky towards a table with Shanshui landscapes, and a group of figures wearing suits and working on an icy surface with a sea lion looking at them. TSAI Shih-Hung’s portrayal of groups of people carrying out the same actions was employed as a metaphor for their inability to discern their targets and goals, and their readiness to submit to demands and orders. The final result shows a magical yet insecure atmosphere that serves as a metaphor to the unfeeling and isolated environment as well as the artificial truths we are exposed to in our daily lives.
