TSAI Shih-Hung’s artistic inspirations are derived from the technological advancements of the modern society as well as popular computer games. His works, therefore, tend to include his worries and concerns for impending war. Hide and Seek is based upon TSAI Shih-Hung’s reflection on handheld technologies where all senses are digitally controlled. Blindfolded eyes have lost its senses, while other sensory organs have expanded. A dark overcast sky looms over the entire canvas, while a mysterious billboard with an advertisement titled “Miracle” selling a bright and better future is placed in the center. The resulting composition conveys an unreal environment of deep uncertainties. TSAI Shih-Hung has created a magical yet insecure setting, comparing it with the alienation and loneliness of modern lifestyles while inferring to the virtual and unreal aspects of our everyday lives.
