Artist Shiau Bei-Chen’s Framing Silence 2022-1 shows what seems to be a wide lawn extending up a slope toward a few large trees standing on the top of the rise. The light source comes from the upper left corner, so the shadow of the large tree is imprinted in the lower right foreground. The image as a whole is blurry, but there is a clear black line crossing from upper left to right. In his “Framing Stillness” series, Shiau took blurry landscape photos while riding high-speed or express trains, and then tried to use clear lines to outline the things that still stood out clearly in his mind. He painted with toners, acrylics, or transfer printing on thin sheets of epoxy that had hardened into a smooth, translucent form. He then brushed the image off, reapplied a layer of resin, and repeated the process. The repeated layers form the blurry scenery, reproducing the ambiguous nature of human memory.
