In the foreground of Framing Stillness 2021-8 by artist Shiau Bei-Chen, there is a curving road lined with big trees, and in the distance are a number of urban buildings. The entire image is blurry, but there are clear black lines. In his “Framing Stillness” series, Shiau took blurry landscape photos while riding high-speed or express trains, and then tried to use clear lines to outline the things that still stood out clearly in his mind. He applied a thin layer of epoxy resin to the wood, which hardens into a smooth translucent sheet when it dries. Then he used toner, acrylic paint, or transfer printing to create the image on this sheet, which he washes off. As the process is repeated, with the image superimposed over and over again, the scene becomes somewhat blurry, but still identifiable. It recreates the ambiguous nature of human memory.
