When the artist Tao Gang travels, he always carries a camera and looks for creative inspiration. The Chinese title, 望(4), refers not only to a distant “view,” as expressed in the English title View (4), but also connotes hope and longing. He composes the painting from the perspective of looking into the distance from a high altitude, with the sea in the far distance. Sea and sky are connected, though divided by a very faint line, and black mica paint is used to depict the starry sky reflected on the sea surface. Point by point trace the outline of the rugged coastal landscape, and flecks of mica in the black paint of the sea reflect starlight. In addition, the details in the outline of the rugged coastal landscape are drawn with a brush. Without colors, this austerely magnificent black-and-white landscape seems silent and lonely—a world where the avant-garde and traditional poetic aspects of ink painting coexist, waiting for us to fill in the gaps with our own stories.
