TAO Kang’s modern ink painting works are inspired by the time and environment that he lives in, and convey the emotional state of human society using a rational and emotionless composition. “Cornered Beast (4)” shows a massive walled-off space in a natural landscape, tearing apart the natural vista and giving it an oppressive atmosphere. Weak animals are scattered about the undulating valleys, and appear even more helpless and isolated when contrasted against the boundless natural world around them. The use of black and white tones further accentuates the loneliness and unfeeling characteristics of the composition. The densely packed tiny white dots create a unique texture and weight. Modern society may have brought civilization and progress, but it also weakened the spiritual and cultural essence of the human race, reducing them to the trapped beasts depicted in the painting. TAO Kang thus makes use of his ink painting works as a reflection of the modern lifestyle.
