TAO Kang’s modernist ink painting is based upon the atmosphere of his age and surroundings, and conveys the emotional state in human society by creating a rational, cold, and calculating atmosphere. Between Shores 1 uses geometric shapes and uniquely shaped mountains to dissect the composition into an upper and lower half. The utilization of black and white color tones convey a lonesome and cold atmosphere, while the densely packed tiny, white dots create a unique texture and sense of mass. Tiny, skeletal creatures dominate their respective mountaintops, which only serves to heighten the sense of helplessness and isolation when contrasted with the infinite darkness in the surroundings. TAO Kang uses a unique vocabulary of modernist ink painting to deconstruct the tradition, leading viewers to contemplate the meaning of existence by witnessing the nature of life.
