In the work Fractal, artist Yang Tzu-Yi simplifies mountains and bodies of water into large geometric figures, and stacks them with layers of light to dark grey and black. For him, although the shapes and structures of mountains and seashores in nature may seem complicated and hard to understand, in fact there is a hidden order to them. He uses geometric figures as units to disassemble and rearrange them, and present them to the viewer in a way that exhibits the laws of nature. On the top layer, he used acrylic to paint small triangles of various grey shades that look like pieces of paper falling on the surface; these help to create a sense of space. Although the various geometric shapes have sharp, clear outlines, their repeated layering makes them fuzzy and ambiguous.
