The artist Hsu Jui-Fu entered the black-and-white world of drawing as the result of an eye ailment. To master the subtle changes of color gradation in oil paintings, he had deliberately painted in dim light for many years, which caused an optic nerve disorder. While his eyes were recuperating, he switched to drawing with warm-toned pencils and began his “Microscopic Objects” series. In Stone-3, created in 2017, everything is essentially piled up bit by bit with his pencils, and with a great amount of wiping and superimposition. Eventually, the soul of this immense stone emerges through the detail of the drawing, achieved through complete, ritualistic concentration. The stone’s contours and textures, the work of millions of years, appears before us through each powerful stroke. After we investigate the extremes in the representation of the object, we can temporarily lose focus and concentrate instead on the abstract beauty under the macro view. The large stone is located near Hsu Jui-Fu’s home, and this picture is his love letter to his hometown and to nature.
