Decaying matter is a favorite subject of artist HSU Jui-Fu’s work, in which he attempts to elevate unsightly things to a profound and poetic spiritual level. In Dark Scenery – 4, Hsu presents a close-up look at his subject, using detailed, layered brushstrokes to show the process of decay. In this piece, he shows us a spreading growth of mold in murky grey hues. In this painting, Hsu transforms the unsightly, corrupted aspect of the subject into a poetic and picturesque abstract work.
