Decaying matter is a favorite subject of artist HSU Jui-Fu’s work, in which he attempts to elevate unsightly things to a profound and poetic spiritual level. In Observation Record – 19, Hsu presents a close-up look at his subject, using detailed, layered brushstrokes to show the process of decay. The decaying object, corrupted by spreading mold, contrasts sharply with the fresh reds surrounding it. In this painting, Hsu transforms the unsightly, corrupted aspect of the subject into a poetic and picturesque abstract work.
