Decaying matter is a favorite subject of artist HSU Jui-Fu’s work, in which he attempts to elevate unsightly things to a profound and poetic spiritual level. In Together with Them Series – 7, HSU Jui-Fu draws a parallel between himself and a patch of mold, depicting a luxuriant scene of dense vegetation with finely detailed sketching techniques. The festering patch of mold is changing the face of this mystical, flourishing jungle. The mold looks like a sky full of stars and clouds, giving the scene a romantic quality. In this piece, Hsu sketches the appearances of numerous plant species he’s observed. But then he adds his unique thoughts and ideas about microbes, causing the items in the scene to decay in an unsightly way, transforming the image into a poetic abstract picture, embodying his mystical connection to the species at a spiritual level.
