The silhouettes of the two aircraft and the floral pattern of fabric in the foreground create a perspective reminiscent of gazing up at fighter jets from a field of flowers. Artist Chi Chien stretched two pieces of floral fabric, commonly found in everyday life, onto separate canvases, then covered them with a generous amount of paint, leaving only a few blossoms as focal points. The aircraft-shaped metal plate is attracted by magnets on the back of the canvas, “sucking” it into the picture and creating a sense of depth and space. For Chi Chien, the floral fabric embodies a sense of the present and tenderness; the fighter plane plate’s shape, inspired by photographs taken by war correspondents during World War II, carries historical memories of the past and masculine connotations. He ultimately combined two similarly composed paintings to create this work. The black lines within the painting metaphorically represent the deeper issues he has been pondering throughout this series, such as “binary opposition,” and “What is the boundary?”
