For artist Chi Chien, images, paintings, and materials are three different languages, and the co-constructive relationship between the three is the core theme he wants to explore through painting. For example, in the Chinese title of this work, he uses the word zai (re-) instead of zai (presence), so his work Representation corresponds to the concept of “representation” in painting, through a special production method. Chi Chien transforms a piece of “material” floral cloth into an “image” floral cloth, and then silk prints the image of the floral cloth on a white canvas. Through this process of repeated reproduction, a dialectical relationship arises from reality to virtuality, and then from virtuality to reality. The airplane in the picture, made by metal laser cutting, symbolizes the presence or existence of time and people. It has “flown” into the space-time field of this moment. The past and present, physical entity and virtual image, have become one.
