Back Garden: Distance

Chi Chien’s artistic creations focus on the co-constructive relationship between image layers and painting carriers; they show a deeply speculative spirit and richly layered aesthetic. First of all, the title of the work, Back Garden: Distance, has many connotations, not only representing the concept of power transitioning from the private to public spheres, but also the relative relationship between “front” and “back,” both in time and space. The “Back Garden” series as a whole uses the traditional flower-patterned cloth common in Taiwan as the painting carrier, and in this one, Distance, Chi Chien uses paint to cover a large portion of the painting surface, while he arranges the images of white clouds, an airplane and its shadow, a pocket, two bouquets, and a button across the composition. These are metaphors for the relationship between the skin and outside matter. By revealing a part of the original floral pattern and adding an all-green painted image above it, the artist establishes a dialogue between the images and the materials that coexist in the virtual space of the painting.
