The title, Shadow, Border, Back Garden, describe the three core elements of this work by Chi Chien, which is an extension from Chi Chien’s usual work on floral cloth. The image of the plane in the sky, taken from a documentary film, is made by a cut metal piece and fixed onto the metal plate with a magnet. Bringing these disparate materials together on the same flat surface creating different time and space. As the plane flies over the territory of the back garden, the red line across the sky becomes the flow of time, and also represents a spatial boundary. The viewer seemingly also casts his or her shadow on the flowers below, so that all the elements of the composition are tied together. Chi Chien anticipates that each of them has its own “voice” and conveys its meaning, but of course, each viewer will arrive at their own interpretation.
