LIU Yi-Lan’s works are strongly autobiographical, portraying a distinct personal style while allowing the artist to reflect upon her own life. Love with No Regrets was inspired by the Qing Dynasty painting titled The Twelve Beauties, using definitions of beauty from the Qing Dynasty to contrast views nowadays on women’s issues and values in the modern times. The work criticizes the methods widely used by modern women to pursue a slim figure, showing a woman wearing jade bracelets, necklace, and a Chinese-style dress composed of a black skirt with embroidered phoenixes and silk blouse, which was deliberately unbuttoned by the wearer to show off the true form of her body.
