LIU Yi-Lan is a self-taught artist who spends most of her time selling pickles in a traditional market and working on artistic creations after the markets close. Since she has not undergone any formal academic training in art, her styles are unique and unrestrained, employing bold, saturated composition giving off powerful vitality that serves as a distinct personal signature. Environmental Restrictions show two human-faced carps on a blue-and-white porcelain plate in order to convey the social restrictions that people experience. Despite the superficial illusions that people are living as freely as fishes, most people are unable to break free of social boundaries and restrictions. This artwork is therefore used as a call to encourage people to disregard social norms and lead their own independent lives. LIU Yi-Lan hopes to lead an alternative lifestyle as an artist, using her works as a means of social critique to reflect upon and fight against entrenched social structures.
