LIU Yi-Lan is a self-taught artist who spends most of her time selling pickles in a traditional market and working on artistic creations after the markets close. Since she has not undergone any formal academic training in art, her styles are unique and unrestrained, employing bold, saturated composition giving off powerful vitality that serves as a distinct personal signature. Coolness and Prosperous shows a groom flanked by two brides, each topped by an infant. This artwork highlights the paternal social structure in Taiwan, where women outside marriage would use paternal ties of her child as a means of securing her role and position within the family. LIU Yi-Lan uses this artwork as a subtle hint of the obsession on blood ties amongst Taiwan’s rich and powerful families despite being subject to social norms and rules. LIU Yi-Lan hopes to lead an alternative lifestyle as an artist, using her works as a means of social critique to reflect upon and fight against entrenched social structures.
