LIOU Yi-Lan is an artist who studies on her own. She sells pickled vegetables at the conventional market and only has time for creation after work. She has never received academic training and therefore is unbounded by techniques. Her structure is bold and plump with strong personal style that transpires profuse energy of vitality. Her work, “Clashes of Capitalism: Wardrobe Woes,” shows three women wearing the same style of shirts, skirts and shoes in one occasion. Such awkward occasion reflects the consumer mentality of modern society, where the public likes to highlight personal styles and taste through brand-name clothing. In contrary, the artist believes that personality traits lie on the difference and only inner beauty can transpire the different taste of the person. LIOU Yi-Lan develops her second career in life through art creation, using painting as a retrospective approach to carry out the review and opposition to social structure. The social roles of Taiwanese females have unfolded the image of profound life under her brushes.
