Artwork Appreciation
Artist HO Huey-Chih is adept at creating still lives with exquisite, complex brushstrokes, seeking subjects from everyday objects and food common in Taiwan and arranging them on the canvas. In Feasting Yet Watchful, she describes several simple dishes found in Taiwan’s food culture. The scene is a sumptuous spread of dishes such as oysters with thin noodles, pork shank with shredded bamboo shoots, stir-fried cuttlefish and stir-fried clams, evoking visual delight and giving the viewer the sense of a bountiful feast. In this piece, Ho attempts to wake people up: life cannot be one of indulgence and unchecked waste; instead, we must be ever watchful of ourselves before we can attain true satisfaction and sustainability.
