Artwork Appreciation
Artist HO Huey-Chih is adept at creating still lives with exquisite, complex brushstrokes, seeking subjects from everyday objects and food common in Taiwan and arranging them on the canvas. In Shabu-Shabu, she shows a scene common in Taiwan’s food culture: friends and family gathering for a shabu-shabu meal. Amid the fast pace of modern life, sitting around a table eating hot soups and stews is a way to reconnect the feelings between people. To the artist, shabu-shabu is an expression of human warmth and cordiality. In this painting, she attempts to convey the sense of human caring that existed before this age of technical advancement.
