Artwork Appreciation
Since the digital age began, computers and the Internet have become the main tools by which we learn about the world; we are always using various digital tools to interact with other people and obtain information. The way people socialize has also undergone revolutionary changes. Artist Huang Zan-Lun questions progress and sci-tech development through his “i GOD” series: What exactly is the great power that human beings can obtain through technology? And where does the discarded toxic e-waste go?For i GOD 4, which maps out the Port of Taipei, he used Google Maps for the precise layout, and he cut and pieced together discarded circuit boards to construct the streetscape. He painted on the location’s latitude and longitude. Under this simulated landscape, he added a panel covered with gold foil, as a metaphor for an omniscient and almighty God. The viewer is thus brought to profound reflection on the digital world.
