Artwork Appreciation
YUAN Hui-Li uses the artistic language of traditional Chinese brush and ink painting to express her own views on environmental issues. Her Taixu Series creates a unique "massive mountain" style. In Taixu Series No. 18 YUAN Hui-Li uses the traditional Chinese ink painting texturing technique to meticulously create lines to simulate rocks, giving each mountain a different look. In addition, the surface of the rocks seem to have a coating painted on them, showing what seem to be man-made axe marks. The artist uses a painting technique for rocks is like modern landscape engineering, blending man-made actions into a naturalist scene, symbolizing the fact that with modern science and technology urban construction is expanding without bounds, filling the beautiful landscape with signs of industrial culture, leading to the breakdown of the ideal of a unity of Man and Nature.
