Artist Hyun-Jin Kim uses reduction printing to express profound contemplations of time and life. She believes that the repeated process of engraving, coloring, and pressing creates layers of imagery, imbuing her work with the traces of time. The most striking feature of the print is the overlapping and intertwining blocks of color that define the human figure. The elongated figures, stripped of their features and clothing, retain only their outlines, remnants of figures etched deep in Hyun-Jin Kim’s memory. The giant snail in the lower left corner, its tentacles extended, appears to engage one of the figures in conversation. The dense web of fine lines within the painting connects the relationships between man and nature, man and other living things, and man and the universe. Through this work, she provides a commentary on her years of exploration into “life and existence”: “All things are interconnected through a dense network, and every life is closely connected to others. No one can truly exist independently.”
