The question, “What is the meaning of life?” is addressed in the artist Kim Hyun-Jin’s “Existence” series of prints. Her woodblock prints clearly show the wood grain, and she is accustomed to using scrap wood to make her plates. The damaged parts and irregular borders of these scrap wood pieces add an extra layer of interest to her works. In this print, she adds delicately slender feet under the large orange-pink color block, and in fact, each of the thin color blocks represents a living body with feet. The stairway represents the motivation to climb hopefully upwards, and the plants multiply and proliferate, full of the force of life. Kim Hyun-Jin believes that prints are mirrors that always reflect the realm of her mind. However, the small black rectangles in this image are picture frames, representing the connection between the outside and inside. Through the framed holes, you can peek at the world outside, but at the same time, they can be windows leading to the inner world, through which you can examine yourself.
