In Fantasy’s Second Quadrant, artist CHIN Hsuan-Chen creates a richly colored dreamscape by layering colors with an engraved wood block printing technique. In the foreground of the picture stands a bizarrely shaped creature holding a colored ball in one hand. Behind the creature are layers of geometric forms, which look like a small cluster of buildings. The golden-yellow background gives us the sense of being in a splendid dreamland. Much of Chin’s inspiration comes from careful observations of life. He wanders between fantasy and reality, expressing his capricious inner world through uninhibited imagination and a rich and changing pictorial language, giving the viewer an unrestrained sense of childlike delight.
