Wave, part of artist Li Ping-Yi’s “Breathing: Landscape” series, depicts Dulan beach in Taitung, a secret haven for her creative inspiration. A faint figure can be seen within the painting. The artist once visited the beach with a friend and, seeing his back as he rushed toward the ocean, felt the healing energy of the sea, leading her to incorporate a figure into her work for the first time. She turned the traditional medium of the “plate” into a part of her work, developing a mirrored landscape juxtaposing wood and paper. Half of Li Ping-Yi’s four-panel work is a continuous scene carved layer by layer onto two wooden boards using a reductive technique, while the other half is the same scene printed repeatedly on two pieces of paper. Through the interplay of reduction and overlaying of the colors, the artist presents a dialogue between the real and the imaginary in contrasting textures. It is a milestone in her creative trajectory.
