Wide-open eyes seem to still hold a watery glint, and red noses reveal the appearance of people who have just blown their noses. This artwork, Achoo!, faithfully depicts the body’s reflexive response to stimulation. Artist Hsiao Chu-Fang focuses primarily on people, using clean, effortless lines and bright colors to transform ordinary everyday scenes into humorous and playful images. Hsiao Chu-Fang depicts the moment of sneezing through her painting by employing tools other than brushes, such as stamps to represent the eyes and a bamboo chopstick dipped in paint and then circled with a compass in order to create the noses. She initially intended to wipe the middle of the noses with a rag, but halfway through, it looked like the figures hadn’t blown their noses thoroughly. This unexpected episode became the finishing touch to the artwork and also inspired the title.
