Artist HSIAO Chu-Fang is good at using simple colors and lines to depict the different aspects of life. Her characters are either comedic, or calm and philosophical. In this painting, there are six dots above the head of the character. The character rests his head on his palms, as if staring blankly into space; however, he seems to be waiting for something. There are lots of dots under the head, falling like the sand in an hourglass, as if the sand of time is flowing away without stopping. These “dots” that appear repeatedly symbolize the pauses and intervals in life, which are moments life can take a breather. If we can look at these blank intervals in life with comfort, like the space between comas where we can take a break, then our minds can finally reach a state of tranquility.
