HSIAO Chu-Fang expresses a fragmented sense of reality in a light-hearted, comical style that resembles the simple doodling of a child. Much of her work includes human figures as a central motif, with vivid characters that react with various states of human emotion. In Mr. Eggshell’s Three Pics in Crack Mode, she creates a character, Mr. Eggshell, whose appearance was inspired by the shape of a broken egg. Hsiao imagines the cracked eggshells as eyes, to which she adds the outline of a head complete with a nose and mouth. In all, she creates three images of Mr. Eggshell as if photographed in three different poses, such as grinning into the camera lens or saying hello. But in fact, his empty eyes hint at a blank void in his heart. In this piece, Hsiao attempts to convey how when photographing people, she may be good at capturing them engaged in different actions, but she is unable to portray their true feelings in life.
