Artist Hsiao Chu-Fang excels at using simple colors and lines to convey the subtle and profound moments of life in a lighthearted and humorous way. This work depicts a childhood game she and her sister created called “Lazy Bones”: one person completely relaxes while the other supports them. If they fall to the ground, the supporting person loses. In the painting, the orange figure holds the relaxed, limp green figure on one shoulder, the lines of his/her arm conveying the tension of exerting all his/her strength. Hsiao Chu-Fang uses contrasting red and green colors and lines to convey the contrast between the two figures’ physical and mental states, a metaphor for her own struggles as a full-time artist. Some of her elders see her as a “lazy bones,” believing she spends her days at home doing nothing. Hsiao Chu-Fang channels the tensions of her family into her work, using humor to express the frustrations and realities of real life.
