In CHENG Cheng-Huang’s series A Familiar Strange Land, the yellowish hue of the wooden board has the blood color and resemblance to ancient paintings; the landscape-like world in the paintings is significantly different from the traditional form, and each has a different imagination when viewed from a distance. In the center of the picture is a sphere intertwined with mountain caves. A single-eyed cat, bird, and a creeping creature stand at each side. The sphere contains two eyes of the soul. CHENG Cheng-Huang believes that people can be humans or all living beings, or be a single-eyed cat in different types but that the essences of life is the same. These peculiar elements replace the hermits of traditional Shan Shui, presenting an innovative composition of multiple viewpoints that allow viewers to shuttle back and forth. In the mysterious exploration, the viewer consciouly travels between the caves and ponds, and senses one’s inner nuances.
