作品賞析
CHENG Cheng-Huang’s Affliction Bodhi abandoned the traditional use of paper and instead rubbed layers of charcoal directly onto wood to create a shimmering wooden texture. Woodcuts and knife marks decorate the background to create the trails where wood patterns merge with ink to create a realistic, three-dimensional effect. The human head in the painting has created ripples, while the tree and branches emerging from the forehead intertwine with each other to form the shape of a moon. Clouds with eyes float across the heavens as though looking at the mortal realm. The work employed the two techniques of ink painting and woodcutting that presented the difference between virtual and actual features created by 2D and 3D techniques. The artist guides viewers to reflect and contemplate the meaning of life, and convey the message that stress and Bodhi are but two sides of the same coin. Those capable enough to convert frustrations into Buddhist wisdom will be able to achieve a carefree mentality.
