CHENG Cheng-Huang’s ink painting involves printing the ink artwork onto a wooden panel, and then engraving on the piece of wood to create a surreal dimension where the art itself corresponds to the reliefs and cuts on the wooden surface. Three Rounds of Falun is based on a concept that mimics traditional ink paintings. Surreal landscape scenes were used to convey a cosmic vastness. Giant, horn-shaped stone formations spread outwards in multiple layers, culminating in an opening within which a planet floats, creating what appears to be the eye of the Universe. CHENG Cheng-Huang’s works incorporate spiritual aura of eastern philosophies. The artist has great admiration for the ideas and spirits of poets and writers of the Tang and Song dynasties. Intricate sketches and brushstrokes were used to create an ephemeral sense of pristine serenity while conveying inner enlightenment and spiritual landscapes.
