In “Observing Calmly 1”, CHENG Cheng-Huang abandons the tradition of painting on paper, and directly paints with ink on wood block. Also, by using carving knife, he leaves marks of different depths to create virtual and physical spaces and three-dimensional effect, attempting to re-interpret the ink painting spirit of the Orient. Cheng also uses both Eastern and Western symbols and totems to display the harmony between heterogeneous cultures. By interweaving these elements together, Cheng is able to showcase the cultivation and spirit of literati painting.
