CHENG Cheng-Huang’s ink painting involves printing the ink artwork onto a wooden panel, and then engraving on the piece of wood to create a surreal dimension where the art itself corresponds to the reliefs and cuts on the wooden surface. Knowing Not Your Buddha-nature, Futile to Study 3 is an interpretation on the spirit of Zen using cartoon symbols. A massive eyeball bearing round ears like Mickey Mouse are placed in the composition. Another miniature silhouette of Mickey Mouse and a wilted tree are placed on top of the eyeball to serve as its psychological embodiment. Intricate and repeated engravings were used to create the sky where distorted clouds hang in mid-air, providing additional visual layering and richness to the composition. CHENG Cheng-Huang creates a world of unique objects and images to project the inner self, leading the audience into a special scene of life.
