The Back Area

CHEN Ting-Chun’s artworks use a diary-like narrative to present indoor envioronments that were adapted to actual lifestyles. The Back Area was inspired by her experiences in moving house in other countries where one has to bring the same belongings into different residences again and again. These personal items are clearly outlined in the picture and seem to have been posted to the balcony, creating a familiar yet alien mood at the same time. The wastepaper bins, ladles, mops, and other household items seem to suggest the transient nature of their being. CHEN Ting-Chun uses gentle and light color tones in the background that seem to tell the history of every apartment. Every object adds to the warmth of personal existence, helping to complete the daily story of the living space.
