LIAO Meng-Ling’s intaglio work After You’re Gone is divided into two layers. The first is mostly black, composed of circles, ovals and casual, flowing lines, reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy, while the second layer is a silk-screen print that lays elegant grass-green splotches onto the image. Pigments spreading out along tiny crinkles in the paper give the overall picture an abstract musical cadence. Liao deftly creates a spiritual scene using a casual, natural painting vocabulary.
