Artwork Appreciation
JHAN Jhuang-Syuan’s works focus on the relationship between people and their spaces. The Scenery along the Way _ The Direction/ The Wait shows an incomplete cityscape. Large areas of the canvas were left deliberately white or furnished with only a few sketch marks. Houses on the streets were realistically depicted using pencil sketch lines, yet the scenes remained incomplete. Road lighting and traffic signals with disproportionate sizes were placed within the composition. Life in the city may be confusing, but the giant lights and signals seem to be pointing towards something. The artist’s personal experiences of growing up were used as an inspiration with the hopes of identifying guidance in a confusing existence.
