Artwork Appreciation
Chang Hsien-Wen, a nature-lover, has always explored people’s attitude towards nature in his art. This work includes many triangular color blocks layered on a wooden panel. They symbolize colorful dreams of limitlessly expanding territory—but they are also sharp-pointed and threatening, hinting at the fact that one day, the earth will no longer be able retain balance under the burden of so many heavy dreams. Chang Hsien-Wen used fast-drying acrylic paint on a wooden panel to express people’s behavior in their rapid construction over nature, and the thin lines that extend in various directions suggest the lines of architectural drawings. In the past few decades, as different people have come and gone, they have reorganized, expanded, and piled on the construction, to the point that it lacks any perspective or logic. Meanwhile, apart from the construction, the composition still retains elements of nature—the texture of the wood grain, the stars—so the unknown universe remains present. The artist hopes this can give the viewer something to reflect on.
